I was a kid in the late 1950s and early 1960s and the western was undisputed, unchallenged King of television. No matter what channel you turned to, there was a marshal with a ten gallon hat and big, big badge shooting it out with the bad guys. There were good citizens, like the men of the Ponderosa in Bonanza, fighting evildoers every single week, Women? The most gorgeous women in the world, all in love with the good guys. No matter what channel you turned to, there was the story of truth justice and the American way – on horseback. Six gun glory.

Gun & Powder recently opened at the Paper Mill Playhouse. Opening Night was a joyous evening where the audience was dazzled by the new musical. Tremendous applause and standing ovations echoed throughout the night. There was a feeling of celebration in the air as Gun & Powder appears right on track to become a theater classic. It defines the struggles, triumphs, and the importance of family to black women. It shows them in humble beginnings as they set forth with strength and strive to make their way in a difficult world and establish a better life for themselves.

Created by Tony Award-winning composer and lyricist William Finn and playwright James Lapine, this is an unexpectedly funny show that gives a glimpse into the inner world of Gordon Michael Schwinn (played by Patrick Dwyer), a frustrated composer for a children's television show. (MILLBURN, NJ) -- Paper Mill Playhouse is presenting Gun & Powder through May 5, 2024. The new musical features book and lyrics by Angelica Chéri and music by Ross Baum. Directed by Stevie Walker-Webb, choreographed by Tiffany Rea-Fisher and music directed by Austin Cook, Gun & Powder is inspired by the true story of Mary (Renée) and Martha Clarke (LaFontaine), African American twin sisters who take extraordinary measures to settle their mother's sharecropper debt and save her home. Photographers Evan Zimmerman and Jeremy Daniel were on hand to take photos.
